What the check covers

Twelve things every office network needs

Firewall and remote access

A supported business firewall, and remote access that does not leave the door open to the internet.

Segmentation and guests

Staff, cameras, phones, smart devices and guests kept on separate networks.

Filtering and updates

Blocking known bad sites, changing default passwords and keeping firmware current.

Hardware age

Whether your gear is still supported, and what needs replacing before it fails.

Documentation and settings

A record of how everything is set up, and saved settings for a fast rebuild.

Power, monitoring and Wi-Fi

Battery backup, alerts when things go down, and coverage where people work.

The check

Twelve questions, about five minutes

  3. Your details
Firewall · Q1
Is your internet connection protected by a business-grade firewall that still gets security updates, not only the box from your internet provider?

Provider routers are built to be easy, not secure, and many stop getting updates after a few years.

Remote access · Q2
Do staff reach the office remotely through a VPN or similar tool with multi-factor sign-in, with no remote desktop ports open to the internet?

An open remote desktop port is one of the most common ways ransomware gets into small offices.

Segmentation · Q3
Are staff computers kept on a separate network (VLAN) from cameras, phones, printers and smart devices?

Cameras and smart devices rarely get updates. Keeping them apart limits how far one bad device can reach.

Guest Wi-Fi · Q4
Can guests and personal phones reach only the internet, and not your business computers, files or printers?

A shared Wi-Fi password that also opens the business network is one of the most common gaps we find.

Filtering · Q5
Do you block known malicious and unwanted websites at the network or DNS level?

DNS filtering stops many phishing and malware sites before a page even loads.

Updates · Q6
Are firewall, switch and Wi-Fi access point updates installed regularly, and have all default passwords been changed?

Network devices have security flaws too, and default admin passwords are published online.

Please answer every question on this step to continue.

Hardware age · Q7
Is your network equipment still supported by its maker and roughly seven years old or newer?

Once a device is past end of support, new security flaws in it are never fixed.

Documentation · Q8
Is there an up-to-date record of your network: each device, where it is, how it is set up, and who holds the admin logins?

Without it, every outage starts with guesswork, and changing providers gets harder.

Settings backup · Q9
Are your firewall and switch settings backed up, so a failed device can be replaced and restored quickly?

Rebuilding a firewall from memory can take a day. Restoring saved settings takes minutes.

Power · Q10
Are your modem, firewall and main switch plugged into a battery backup (UPS)?

A short power flicker can drop the whole office offline and can damage equipment.

Monitoring · Q11
Would someone be alerted if your internet, firewall or Wi-Fi went down, before staff noticed?

Monitoring catches failing hardware and outages early, often before anyone is affected.

Wi-Fi coverage · Q12
Does Wi-Fi reach every area where people work, without dead spots or regular drop-outs?

Weak coverage wastes time every day and often comes down to where access points are placed.

Yes. There is no cost and no obligation, and the results and written summary are yours to keep whether or not you work with us.

No. This check looks at how your network is built and looked after: the firewall, Wi-Fi, separation between devices, updates, documentation, power and monitoring. A vulnerability scan is a separate service that tests your systems for known weaknesses. If you need one, mention it in the form and we will talk it through.

No. Answer as best you can. “Not sure” is a useful answer, and it usually points to something worth writing down.

We work remotely across the United States. We go through your results on a call and screen share, and can work with your local contractor for anything that needs hands on site.
